Family Promise was founded in Summit, NH in 1988 on the belief that people are compassionate and want to make a difference. Family Promise has grown into a national non-profit organization which now includes 202 Affiliates across 42 states. Family Promise mobilizes more than 180,000 volunteers and 6, 000 congregations across the country. Family Promise is a partnership of congregations within a community helping families who are facing homelessness. It offers an opportunity for volunteers of all faiths to reduce homelessness and transform lives.
Family Promise of Indiana County was established in 2011 in response to the need for additional services for homeless families. According to the 2010 census, there are approximately 400 homeless people in Indiana County each night. Family Promise provides homeless families with basic human needs, accommodation, safety and sustenance with a spirit of warmth and hospitality. In addition to meals and shelter, Family Promise provides case management to help families develop sustainable independence. Family Promise does not receive any government money; we depend on donations and fund raising to maintain this vital program.
Since opening our doors in December of 2011, we have cared for 47 families-63 adults and 84 children. We have an 84% success rate when you use maintaining permanent housing as the measure of success.
